Pool Fence in Pittsburgh

What Pennsylvania pool barrier code asks of a fence and its gate.

A privacy fence is a matter of preference. A pool barrier is a matter of code, and the rules are specific about height, gaps, and how the gate latches. This is the short version.

Aluminum is the common pool fence in Western Pennsylvania, since vertical pickets meet the spacing rule. See aluminum fencing for heights and installed price. Local amendments can add to these rules, so we confirm yours at the estimate. Full detail in our post on pool fence requirements in Pennsylvania.

Pool fence questions

The barrier around a residential pool must be at least 48 inches (4 feet) high, measured on the side facing away from the pool. Some municipalities amend that, so confirm your local rule.

The space between vertical pickets must be less than 4 inches, and the gap between the bottom of the barrier and the ground can be no more than 4 inches (2 inches over a solid surface like a deck or concrete).

The gate must be self-closing and self-latching, and it must swing away from the pool. If the latch release is on the pool side, it must be at least 54 inches above the ground. A lower release needs additional shielding around the latch.

Powder-coated aluminum is the common pool fence in Western Pennsylvania. Vertical pickets meet the spacing rule, and self-closing hinges with a magnetic self-latching gate are standard hardware. Installed, it is $50 to $60 per linear foot at 4 ft and $70 to $80 at 5 ft or 6 ft.

Pool barrier codes apply whether or not your municipality requires a fence permit. The City of Pittsburgh requires an occupancy permit for every fence. Most projects need 4 to 6 weeks of lead time to cover permitting and scheduling, so plan ahead of pool season.
