Fence rules in Mt. Lebanon

Mt. Lebanon is in Allegheny County.

Permit

Mt. Lebanon requires a fence permit for a new fence, a replacement, or a relocation. The application needs two copies of a current, to-scale property survey with the surveyor's name and seal, with the fence drawn on it. Fences must sit entirely on your property. Questions go to the Inspection Office at 412-343-3408.

Height limits

Fences can be up to 6 feet, except a shadowbox fence, which can be up to 4 feet (2 feet of lattice may be added to reach 6). Fences are not permitted in front of the building line on your survey. Privacy fences are prohibited unless replacing an existing legal nonconforming fence, and open spaces must be at least 50 percent of the width of each panel. Height is measured from the average finished grade within 2 feet of the fence line.

Pool barrier

Mt. Lebanon says a fence enclosing a private swimming pool must be at least 4 feet high, up to 6 feet, and meet the barrier requirements of the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. Read our pool fence guide.
