Fence rules in Jefferson Hills
Jefferson Hills is in Allegheny County.
Permit
Jefferson Hills requires a Zoning Permit for all fences. The application needs a detailed site plan showing the fence and its distance from property lines and existing structures; the zoning officer may ask for a survey. No payment is due until the permit is approved, and no work may begin before the permit is paid for and picked up. Call the borough at 412-655-7735.
Height limits
Decorative fences such as split rail, not intended to enclose or secure property, up to 4 feet are permitted in a front yard. Fences at least 50 percent transparent, up to 5 feet, may go in rear and side yards. Privacy fences (less than 50 percent transparent), up to 6 feet, may go in the rear yard only, and only if attached to the principal structure.
Pool barrier
Jefferson Hills handles fences used as pool barriers through its separate pool and spa packet, not the fence packet. Pennsylvania pool barrier rules call for a barrier at least 48 inches high, measured on the side facing away from the pool, with a self-closing, self-latching gate that swings away from the pool. If the latch release is on the pool side it must be at least 54 inches off the ground. Municipalities can adopt their own changes, so confirm with yours. Read our pool fence guide.
